The Three Lovers: Characters

The Three Lovers is my first epic fantasy series, and here are descriptions of the main characters, without spoilers!

The three main characters are Erashaya, Ibban-Lothy and Kelsingar.

They are The Three Lovers, polyamorous heroes who scheme in the sprawling city of Krel-Shamarith and adventure across the Kingdom of The Spine and its two deserts, under the light of three moons.

Erashaya

A 30 year old beggar-thief with a sharp tongue and a cunning intellect. Ery is the leader of the Three Lovers, she is the glue that binds the relationship of three together.

She is selectively religious, wearing a necklace with dozens of different symbols of the Lost Gods, so she can brandish the right one in any given situation!

Her mother raised her to be a Believer, one of a group of preachers hailing from the White-Gold Desert of Zaradamus.

Ery is agile, skilled with throwing knives and first to act in any situation.

Since her teenage years, Ery has been a deadwomb - she cannot give birth, and this is a source of trauma, wanting to create life but not able to…

Ibban-Lothy

A 19 year old disgraced scholar from the Manse of the Magicians, recently expelled for copying dangerous books and selling them to the library.

He is a vegetarian, due both to his love of animals and his ability to talk to them, having learnt the Ways of the Wyrd at the Manse.

Ib loves books and his skill in translation is second to nobody in the kingdom, due to his mastery of the Ways of the Wyrm, a magical power that twists human languages to his will.

Contrary to Ery, he is an atheist, believing in no Lost Gods.

Ib is diseased, his bones ache, gnawing him from the inside out. He seeks a cure, but his time is running out…

Kelsingar

A 45 year old ex-knight and mercenary, a pale northman who only recently arrived in the city of Krel-Shamarith, seeking work.

He is a warrior with a steel sword, relying on his strength and decisiveness to solve situations.

He had a strict moral code before he met Ery and Ib.

Kel is ever regretful of his past, and the wars that he fought for barons and dukes, never finding a cause to truly believe in. In those wars he searched for his younger brother in unnamed fields… missing, presumed dead.

The Witch of the Shards

A young prophetess trapped in the prisons of the Stygian King, forced to watch his enemies in a broken orb of power. She yearns to escape, but cannot remember how she got there, nor can she remember her own name…

Her captors call her The Eyes, for she glimpses thousands of stories of the city above and reports them to her lord.

The Stygian King

The ruler of Krel-Shamarith and King of The Spine.

His origins are cloaked in mystery, a dark warrior from the depths of the Blood-Pink Desert of Ysgrail who rose with an order of knights to conquer The Spine.

But why? For power? For glory?

He commands three witches. The common-folk believe he lies with them in the Onyx Towers of Sorcery, and they birth demons for him when one of the moons is full…

Zenzimel

An employee of Weal & Woe, an organisation of archaeologists divided into Procurers (those who seek artefacts in the ruins of dead civilisations) and Appraisers (those who identify the powers of those artefacts).

She is an Appraiser. And one day the Three Lovers stroll into her shop, seeking an artefact for the Festival of the Gift. She is more than happy to provide the greatest gifts of all… for a price…
